word on the street.

The world’s favourite (and half educational) spelling board game is back this year, with the release of the 2011 Collins Official Scrabble Words book.

Well, it may be a regular release, but this year’s edition features more than 3,000 new words that can be used during play, including terms such as “innit”, “Facebook”, “thang” and “grrl”.

And believe it or not, this move has created an uproar, with Scrabblers around the world labelling it as “encouraging poor language skills”.

In response, the compilers of the dictionary have responded by stating that it is “fundamental”, and only makes sense that common words, such as these, are added.

Times are a changing, innit?
